TRPC (Tab Room on the PC)

NOTE: If you are a long-time user of TRPC, please read carefully the Installation Instruction paragraph at the bottom of this column. Windows 7 and 8 and have some requirements that change the procedure for TRPC installation.

TRPC schedules and tabulates debate tournaments. This free software has been used in hundreds of debate tournaments including the intercollegiate National Debate Tournament and numerous high school tournaments (The Barkley Forum of Emory University, Wake Forest, Greenhill, Heart of Texas, The Glenbrooks, Montgomery Bell Academy, Florida Blue Key, the Tournament of Champions, many in-state invitational tournaments and a majority of state tournaments).

Capabilities: TRPC is designed for policy, Lincoln Douglas, public forum, and various parliamentary debate formats. The software can manage up to 400 schools, 400 contestants, 400 judges and 400 rooms. Judge assignment choices are random, judge ranking, and mutual judge preference. Thirteen different tie-breaking choices are available.

Computer operating systems? TRPC will work with any Windows operating system from Windows98, to WindowsXP, Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8.

What is the difference between the full installation copy and the update? You will need the full installation copy if you have never before installed TRPC on your computer. If you have already installed TRPC, you will need only the current update.

I recommend to all TRPC users that they create a folder on the desktop to run TRPC. In Windows 7 or Windows 8, this is the only way to keep the TRPCData folder (the folder that contains your tournament data) in a usable location. This process will also work fine for earlier Windows versions. Follow the installation steps below:

Full Installation Steps: 1. Click the button at left for Full TRPC Installation; 2. Locate the file called TRPC99.exe that has been downloaded to your computer, and double click it, then follow the on-screen instructions for installation; 3. Create a folder on your desktop by right-clicking on the desktop and selecting the “New” option to create a new folder -- re-name the folder giving it a name you will recognize; 4. Find the place where TRPC has installed the TRPC.exe file, then copy and paste it inside of your new folder on the desktop. The TRPC.exe file will be found inside your C drive, inside the “Program Files” folder and inside the “TRPC” folder. Your computer may now show the .exe extension on TRPC unless you have your computer preferences set to show extensions; 5. Run TRPC out of the folder on your desktop by double-clicking it -- TRPC will tell you that it cannot find your data files (a normal message for first operation of TRPC). You will then proceed with the on-screen instructions to format new data files. You are now ready to operate your tournament in TRPC; your data files will be inside the folder on your desktop inside a folder called TRPCData.

Instructions for TRPC update: Changes in Windows 7 and Windows 8 prevent the TRPC40.exe update file from automatically replacing the TRPC.exe file that is located inside of your C drive and “Program Files” folder. Accordingly, just place the TRPC40.exe file inside a folder on your desktop. Once you have placed it there, double-click it and the file will create an updated version of TRPC.exe inside of the folder on your desktop. Operate your tournament from this location (double clicking the TRPC.exe program that has been created inside the folder on your desktop). Just remember to start up your TRPC program from the folder on your desktop, rather than from the older version of TRPC that the full installation version placed inside the “Program Files” folder on your C drive.
